Back in Black 2011 – 2015

With an interest in how crisis and failure are absorbed into material I consider how we left our entire lives behind, often with just the clothes on our backs and came here to start over. This was the beginning of a journey,
where global economic, environmental and political disparities converge. How do we depict these forces of light and dark? After the magnitude-9.0 earthquake struck in the Pacific Ocean off the northeast coast of Japan’s Honshu island on March 11, 2011. The Great East Japan Earthquake — the name given to the event by the Japanese government — triggered a massive tsunami that flooded more than 200 square miles of coastal land. An estimated 20,000 people were dead or missing and close to 500,000 people were forced to evacuate. In addition, a nuclear power plant meltdown triggered a nuclear emergency. We decided it was time to leave Japan and after some wandering resettled in the Blue Mountains. These works were constructed with this in mind from 2011-2015.
